Biography:

Matthew Flinders is Professor of Parliamentary Government & Governance at the University of Sheffield and Adjunct Distinguished Professor of Public Policy within the Sir Walter Murdoch School of Public Policy and International Affairs, Murdoch University, Western Australia. His previous books include Multi-Level Governance (2004, co-edited with Ian Bache), Democratic Drift (2008), Delegated Governance (2009), Oxford Handbook of British Politics (2009) and Defending Politics (2012) (all Oxford University Press).

He is a former winner or recipient of the Harrison Prize (2002), Richard Rose Award (2004), Mackenzie Prize (2009), and the Sam Aaronovitch Memorial Prize (2013). He received the ‘Political Communicator of the Year Award’ in 2012 and was a winner in the Economic and Social Research Council’s 2013 national ‘Impact Prizes’ competition (in the overall ‘Impact Champion’ category). His most recent book – Defending Politics – was shortlisted for the ‘Political Book of the Year 2012’ competition and was nominated for the Orwell Prize.

He is the co-editor of the journal Policy & Politics and also sits on the Executive Committee of the Political Studies Association and on the Board of the Academy of Social Sciences. In September 2013 he became the Founding Director of the world’s first university research centre dedicated to the Public Understanding of Politics – the Crick Centre. He is a very proud descendant of Captain Matthew Flinders, the first person to map and circumnavigate Australia.
